Can we just rest? Because we need it.

This was the request from my husband as we stood 3 feet apart in our dining area. Can we just rest? Because we need it. We had both been running in many directions all morning trying to "light "around our back porch table but distractions were everywhere.

This was the request from my husband as we stood 3 feet apart in our dining area. Can we just rest? Because we need it.  We had both been running in many directions all morning trying to "light "around our back porch table but distractions were everywhere. In reflecting back this morning I can more accurately describe it. We were like the two hummingbirds that visit our feeders during this time of year. Both flying around and only stopping for a second to drink. The drink seems necessary for their survival and yet they chase each other from the feeder to the honeysuckle in constant movement. That is what we were doing moving from one room to the next not really accomplishing anything and not able to get to our destination to rest. We had just returned home from a trip to South Texas. It had been a "full" trip. It began almost two weeks ago, this adventure (a word we use to describe our current lives). We had plans to spend time with our adult children and grandchildren, a mother-daughter trip to Houston with my mom and sister, an appointment to meet with our daughter's suitor, and to celebrate our oldest daughter's birthday with her and her husband and our youngest grandson (a dinner out at her restaurant of choice). The Monday morning drive began with a stop at the medical lab, first stop then on the road. We always plan to read and study and to listen to various pastors seeking to "fill and re-fuel" and to learn with the hope and expectation of gathering wisdom to apply to our lives and the lives of those God has loaned to us for this season. The time was spent accomplishing all the above activities but as we settled back into our home in Oklahoma we were wanting to sit together on our back porch and rest. We seemed to have been distracted all morning. I was thankful for my husband's invitation even though it was delivered in a tone that was frustrated and somewhat urgent.

I began this blog on August 5, 2016. Today is September 5, 2016, a month later. Today began at 7 am, much like other days, we have a "full" to do list. I have on my list to write and FINISH this blog. My desire has been to write one more often than I am currently accomplishing. I am a "reflector and assessor" so I want to ask myself if it's a desire to blog more often, why am I not? In re-reading the first section of my blog from a month ago I reflect on how many activities "call" for our attention. As I write this and finish my thoughts I wonder how often you are called to "rest" by someone in your life who loves you, a spouse or maybe even your Father God. When they call or invite you to "rest" do you receive it as an invitation to recharge or an obstacle to "getting your list done" I am learning that "rest" is necessary and I'm enjoying it more and more often.

I would love to hear your thoughts. Please share below.

Lord, help us to balance our time and activities. Put people in our lives that help us to "rest" and recharge. Help us to see the value in resting. Amen
