Pentecost 2018

By Jaimi Jones
The Holy Spirit did not make His first appearance at Pentecost. Students of the Bible will find Him mentioned as early as the creation account (Genesis 1:2). He is also shown to be doing the Father's work throughout the Old Testament and Gospels.
Pentecost 2018

Pen·te·cost
\'pen-ti-?ko?st, -?käst\
noun
: a Christian holiday on the seventh Sunday after Easter that celebrates the appearance of the Holy Spirit to the apostles

When John and I were reading together this morning, we started our time with an awareness that this Sunday many Christians celebrate Pentecost or Shavuot in the Jewish Culture.  As Christians we traditional celebrate Pentecost on the seventh Sunday after Easter, this year May 20th

Now, some of you are undoubtedly more educated than me about Pentecost, but I invite you to keep reading.

This weekend, we were at Freedom 14 Camp, in Wimberly, Texas. We were helping to serve 30 men who had gathered for a Wild at Heart Boot Camp. One of the men in attendance was our 21-year-old son. We certainly had a special interest in God showing up and showing off. We were excited when we realized the significance of this week-end in the church as a whole. It is a time to seek new revelation and a special thankfulness for God's provision in our life. As I began to search for more information I came across several special prayers for this day and articles written by well-respected scholars. I felt like a school girl learning new things that were of interest to me.

This is what I read from Charles Stanley:

The Holy Spirit did not make His first appearance at Pentecost. Students of the Bible will find Him mentioned as early as the creation account (Genesis 1:2). He is also shown to be doing the Father's work throughout the Old Testament and Gospels. However, the Spirit arrived in the upper room with a fresh mission from the Father.

In the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit empowered individuals for specific tasks.
Then the Holy Spirit equipped him or her for the task. He gave power only to certain people and didn't necessarily remain with them long.

Since Pentecost, every believer has received the Holy Spirit. If Jesus is the vine and we are the branches, then the Spirit is the sap equipping us for the Christian life. Furthermore, He no longer comes and goes but rather remains permanently. He seals us in Christ—proof of the promise that we are forever in God's presence (Ephesians 1:13-14).

This is an old testament scripture about the coming of the Holy Spirit:

Then a Shoot (the Messiah) will spring from the stock of Jesse [David's father], And a Branch from his roots will bear fruit. And the Spirit of the Lord will rest on Him-- The Spirit of wisdom and understanding, The Spirit of counsel and strength, The Spirit of knowledge and of the [reverential and obedient] fear of the Lord -- ISAIAH 11:1-2 AMP

My prayer based on the above scripture:

Lord we ask for a fresh anointed from you on this day, Pentecost. We ask that when we are meditating and thinking on the many blessings in our life that we would come with an expectation of all that you have for us. As we study this verse from Your Prophet Isaiah, let us be intentional in our pursuit of Your wisdom, understanding, counsel, courage, and a reverence for You.

Lord Jesus, as God's Spirit came down and rested upon you,
May the Holy Spirit rest on us,

Grant us wisdom,
that we may discern Your Will.

Grant us the gift of understanding,
By which your precepts may enlighten our minds.

Grant us counsel, by which we may follow
in your footsteps on the path of righteousness.

Grant us courage,
so that we can speak truth in love.

Grant us knowledge,
by which we can distinguish good from evil and submit to what is good.

Grant us fear,
a fear adjoined with love and hope, and is therefore not a slavish dread, but rather reverence.
