Edgy Women Bible Study 11-20-17

Why do you study the Bible?

How do we study the Bible?          Teach me, Be a Student

What do you do with the knowledge you learn? How do you pass it on?

The Bible is the inspired and authoritative Word of God.

Isaiah 40:7-8 (ESV)

7 The grass withers, the flower fades

    when the breath of the Lord blows on it;

    surely the people are grass.

8 The grass withers, the flower fades,

but the word of our God will stand forever.

Matthew 24:35 (ESV)

35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away

Psalm 119:160 (ESV)

160 The sum of your word is truth,

and every one of your righteous rules endures forever.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 (ESV)

16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

Isaiah 55:9 (ESV)

9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth,

so are my ways higher than your ways

and my thoughts than your thoughts.

If it is our goal to be pleasing to God in all of life. As a believer, a critical part of life is reading, studying and understanding of the Bible.

James 1:22 (ESV)

22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.

James 1:22 (NIV)

22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.

Ezra 7:10 (ESV)

10 For Ezra had set his heart to study the Law of the LORD, and to do it and to teach his statutes and rules in Israel.

Joshua 1:7-8 (ESV)

7 Only be strong and very courageous, being careful to do according to all the law that Moses my servant commanded you. Do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may have good success wherever you go. 8 This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.

Psalm 25:4 (ESV)

Make me to know your ways, O Lord; teach me your paths.

Psalm 32:8 (ESV)

I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you.

Psalm 86:11(ESV)

Teach me your way, O Lord, that I may walk in your truth; unite my heart to fear your name.

Psalm 143:10 (ESV)

Teach me to do your will, for you are my God! Let your good Spirit lead me on level ground!

Make the scriptures personal: For example:

Psalm 25:4 Make (lead- stir up desire) me (Jaimi- your daughter) to know (understand-interpret) Your Ways (not my own ways, but Your ways learned through The Bible and prayer and communication with You) O Lord (my savior, lover of my soul the ultimate authority in my life, ) teach (through the Word, other people, music, Your creation) me (Jaimi) Your paths (Your ways Father God, not my own). Amen

Studying the Bible also helps us avoid theological error. The Bible tells us, "Watch your life and doctrine closely" (1 Timothy 4:16 NIV), adding that we "must teach what is in accord with sound doctrine" (Titus 2:1 NIV). If the Bible is our authority for faith and life, then the inspired words it contains will help us to avoid error. In a pluralistic world with many religious and non-religious ideas competing for attention, studying the Bible provides us with a firm foundation in God's truth rather than the errors of the world. Knowing the Bible also helps us respond to error and answer questions that skeptics and others may have about it. It is helpful in building us up so that we may serve, love and glorify God and His Son, Jesus Christ, as we are created to do.

1 Timothy 4:16 (ESV)

16 Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching. Persist in this, for by so doing you will save both yourself and your hearers.

Titus 2:1 (ESV)

2 But as for you, teach what accords with sound doctrine.

2 Timothy 2:2 (ESV)

2 and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also.

2 Timothy 2:14-16 (ESV)

14 Remind them of these things, and charge them before God not to quarrel about words, which does no good, but only ruins the hearers. 15 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth. 16 But avoid irreverent babble, for it will lead people into more and more ungodliness,

Parent to Children

Deuteronomy 6:4-9 (ESV)

"Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

Proverbs 1:8 (ESV)

Hear, my son, your father's instruction, and forsake not your mother's teaching,

Proverbs 6:20 (ESV)

My son, keep your father's commandment, and forsake not your mother's teaching.

Beware of False Prophets and Teachers

2 Peter 2:1-3 (ESV)

2 But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction. 2 And many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of truth will be blasphemed. 3 And in their greed they will exploit you with false words. Their condemnation from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.

2 Timothy 4:2-4 (ESV)

2 preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. 3 For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, 4 and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.

Additional Scriptures for Study and Consideration:

1 Timothy 6:3-5 (ESV)

3 If anyone teaches a different doctrine and does not agree with the sound[a] words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the teaching that accords with godliness, 4 he is puffed up with conceit and understands nothing. He has an unhealthy craving for controversy and for quarrels about words, which produce envy, dissension, slander, evil suspicions, 5 and constant friction among people who are depraved in mind and deprived of the truth, imagining that godliness is a means of gain.

Romans 10:14-17  (ESV)

14 How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? 15 And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!" 16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, "Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?" 17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

1 Timothy 2: 8-15 (ESV)

8 I desire then that in every place the men should pray, lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling; 9 likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, 10 but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works. 11 Let a woman learn quietly with all submissiveness. 12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet. 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve; 14 and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor. 15 Yet she will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith and love and holiness, with self-control.

1 Timothy 4:11-16 (ESV)

11 Command and teach these things. 12 Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity. 13 Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation, to teaching. 14 Do not neglect the gift you have, which was given you by prophecy when the council of elders laid their hands on you. 15 Practice these things, immerse yourself in them, so that all may see your progress. 16 Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching. Persist in this, for by so doing you will save both yourself and your hearers.
